TBILISI(BPI)- The Director General of the Transport and Mobility of the European Commission Henrik Hololei says that the EU has expanded trans-European transport network to eastern partnership countries.
Henrik Hololei noted that the mobility and transport are the backbone of the further enhancing of the cooperation between the EU and Georgia. “Transport and mobility, through delivering better links are also lifeblood for our economies. These links enhance not only economic development but also augments people-to-people links.”.
The Director General of the Transport and Mobility of the European Commission informed the audience on launching the dialogue with the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development on developing transport links between the European Union and Georgia. “I am very happy to launch straight after this address with my friend, Minister Kobulia the first dedicated high-level transport dialogue. We had very few such dialogues with the countries and regions with which both sides see a strategic interest in deepening cooperation,” – Hololei noted. He also emphasized the speed and importance of the development of Georgian aviation and tourism sectors and noted that the rapid growth generates new challenges as well. Therefore, it is necessary to further invest in the infrastructure in order to make it compilable with the increasing demand.
“There is another cause for celebration – on January 9, a couple of weeks ago, the EU formally expanded the European Union trans-European transport networks to the eastern partnership countries. This is a very important step. It provides long-term plan of priority connectivity for Georgia, the region and between the region and the EU. It also provides stability and predictability for the investors. We have defined together what are the links we want to invest in the future to make sure that there would be more connectivity between the EU and Georgia” – the Director General of the Transport and Mobility of the European Commission said.
Top priority projects outlined by the EU and Georgian government include construction of a new highway and construction of Anaklia Port.
The Director General of the Transport and Mobility of the European Commission, Henrik Hololei is on working visit in Georgia. Georgia-EU high-level transport dialogue is scheduled during his visit.
